An early morning storm is rolling through, the sky is dull and grey and the horizon invisible behind the cloud. It began as a gentle pattering on the roof, in keeping with the forecast showers, but it wasn't long before we heard thunder rumbling in the distance and the rain began bucketing down. The cold has settled in around us and will probably linger after such a damp and chilly start.
Just the type of morning for porridge! Topped with little blueberries and the distinct sweetness of a swirl of maple syrup, it's delicious. There are other breakfasts that we love just as much:
You can top it with any berries you like or a banana or add some coarsely chopped nuts.
Creamy avocado & feta on toast with last night's leftover roasted veggies.
(You can also make Bubble & Squeak with leftover roasted veggies too:)
(Toasty, warm and delicious on a cold morning with a warm drink.)
Omelette with the goodness of eggs, greens from the garden & leftover roasted veggies. You could add toast, bacon or some baked beans on the side, of course!
(You begin these the night before & bake the next morning for a warm start to the day.)
All of these breakfasts are a nourishing and filling way to start a Winter's day...or any day really. Perhaps you'll be able to make yourself a hearty breakfast or two this coming weekend. Perhaps someone could even be persuaded to make it for you and serve it to you in bed on a tray with a warm cuppa and the day's newspaper (Now, I'm getting ahead of myself!).

Breakfast in bed, Meg? Ha ha! Those days are gone. It does get a little messy though so I never really enjoyed it. It is pouring here and I am waiting for my new front loader washine machine to arrive. I think it is going to get a tad wet. Your food photos look very warming on a cold day.

DeleteOh I must try harder to mix breakfast up a bit, at our house it's toast or cereal 6 days a week! Sunday I try to do pancakes or bacon rolls, all of those breakfasts look great!

DeleteI love all of your tasty breakfast treats Meg, however I've recently learned that it was a carbs filled breakfasts that made me tired and lethargic by 11 am. So it's no breakfast for me, but I will happily eat any of those for lunch. :)
ReplyDeleteBreakfasts should definitely not leave you feeling tired, Sally! I wonder if the omelette, with protein from the eggs, without toast or beans, might work for breakfast for you?? I always have bacon on hand too that we have with a simple fried or boiled egg. I'm always looking for breakfast ideas here because we cut out boxed breakfast cereals ages ago as there is way too much sugar in most of them. Meg:)

I can't function properly without good food in the morning, Kylie. I love being in the kitchen in the quiet of the early morning. I get the work and school lunches done then and get brekkie underway. I usually have slices of the banana bread and a batch of the Breakfast muffins in the freezer for days that are too hectic. Eggs feature often and I love including veg from the garden and maybe mushrooms (which my husband loves) if we have them. I hope you have a great weekend too. Meg:)
DeleteI use to LOVE warm porridge for breakfast, then I went gluten free. I enjoyed the rice flakes, porridge, for a few years after that - delicious cooked with a diced apple, handful of sultanas, cinnamon and vanilla. But then, like Sally, realised high carb breakfasts, were making me tried.
ReplyDeleteSo now I have a piece of fruit for breakfast (oranges lately) or fried eggs with chutney and avocado. I do think your breakfasts look delicious to eat though. :)
