Here & Now 16

It is October and the beautiful Jacaranda trees are in bloom now. Their distinctive seasonal flowering, a soft lavender purple, is synonymous with Spring in our sub-tropical city. In our oldest parks and public gardens and along many streets, these majestic trees put on their Spring display. Here, in my little suburb, there are many jacarandas, their spreading branches covered in masses of their beautiful blossoms. These blossoms fall in a swirl of purple that covers the grass and footpaths below in a soft and flowery carpet. I love to walk beneath them ...

Masses of jacaranda flowers

A carpet of fallen flowers covers the path.

Soft & beautiful purple blossoms.

An almost-silhouette against a greying sky.

Loving //   Jacarandas in bloom, like purple punctuation marks along our streets.

Eating //  Little chocolate chip cookies made with chick peas and peanut butter.
                     (Back to school biscuits!)

Drinking //  Cold water with a few lemon juice ice cubes for zing!

Feeling //  So very tired.

Making //  A set of Melissa's red and white peace doves for Christmas giving.

Thinking //  That Christmas gets earlier every year ...

Dreaming //  Of this distant, but not too distant, shore. It's only seven short weeks away!

I'm not sure what's blooming in your own Here & Now but if you'd like to share, or to peek into the October of others, you can pop over to Sarah at her beautiful blog, Say Little Hen. A visit there will brighten your day!

  1. Love that photo with the Jacaranda flowers on the path. Looks like purple snow.
I was thinking of Christmas too and need to get a wriggle on.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. I need to get a wriggle on with Christmas too, Kylie. I have to have it all sorted and posted before the start of December when we leave for our holiday. I don't like last minute Xmas shopping and try to do handmade or homemade mostly so I have some work to do! I hope your weekend is lovely too. Meg:)

  2. We had a beautiful Jacaranda tree in our front yard when we moved into this house 15 years ago, unfortunately we discovered it's roots were growing up under the corner of our house, and cracking the brick work, (it wasn't even close to the house, just had a very extensive root system) we had to have it removed.

It's not like you to feel tired is it? Working too much perhaps? Look after yourself.

    1. They are beautiful street trees but their root systems can be a problem when planted in the wrong place. Shame you had to remove it but there's nothing else to do when it's cracking your brickwork! I haven't been working that much; it's just our boy is struggling with very frequent nose bleeds and often waking in the middle of the night with them. We have specialist appointment in few weeks and just hanging in til then. Meg Xx

    2. Oh my gosh Meg, our 12 year old has heaps of nosebleeds! We took him to an ENT Dr about 6 weeks ago, he prescribed a cream and nasal spray, but it did nothing, actually I think the spray aggravated his bleeding, so I told him to stop using it. Went for a follow up appointment a week ago, and now he's booked in to have an operation to get his nasal vessels cauterised in November!

    3. We've had a cream to use too, Cheryl, but it hasn't helped at all. I think the bleeding is coming from higher up where cream can't be applied. I hope the operation will help your boy and stop those nose bleeds. It's not much fun for them! Meg Xx

  3. The Jacarandas in my street are showing no signs of flowering yet, but the White Cedars across the road are in full bloom and covered in tiny white and purple flowers. Enjoy your weekend!

    1. The White Cedars sound beautiful, Jan. I love seeing trees in bloom. Poinciana trees with their red flowers are another favourite of mine. Have a lovely weekend too. Meg:)

  4. Jacaranda time is beautiful! One day there's bare branches, the next, that beautiful purple-blue haze that stretches across the town....such pretty trees. I love it when the blossoms fall and make their purple carpet on the ground.....although not everyone's favourite, I see neighbours out madly sweeping it all up.

    1. I love walking over that purple carpet or sitting down on the grass surrounded by the little jaracanda flowers. Too pretty to sweep up! Meg:)

  5. Meg both my children had nose bleeds but they grew out of it when they got older. It seemed to be worse in the hot weather. Love the Jacaranda trees. They always remind me that it is near exam time at the schools as I used to work in a school and my life revolved around the school calendar :-)

    1. I just do relief teaching now, Chel, but with our boy at school we still "march to the beat" of those school days and terms. Always look forward to school holidays too! Our GP thinks that the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist might be able to help with these nose bleeds. Sometimes, our son's nose will bleed several times a day and so improvement on that would be good. 6. Ahhh Jacarandas, one of my favourites too. With all the rain we have had now, the contrast between those purple flowers and the green grass is so striking. Our last cat passed away 2 yrs ago around Jacaranda blooming time and we buried under my parents Jacaranda tree. We remember him now at this time every year.

    1. The rain has been just wonderful and I'm enjoying the lush green grass, we even had to mow the lawn this morning! So much better than dry, crunchy and brown grass! The Jacaranda in bloom is such a lovely reminder of your pet cat, Belinda. Meg:)

  7. I adore Jacaranda trees! They are only just starting to bloom here, not quite in full swing yet. There are quite a few planted in town, I always forget where though until suddenly they are covered in purple :-)
Each year does seem to go faster, doesn't it!
Thanks so much for joining in again Meg,
    Sarah x

  9. Oh the lovely jacaranda purples! So beautiful, although I also remember them as trying to trip/slip me more than once (I am rather clumsy...).

I'm suddenly feeling a cookie craving. Chickpea cookies could be a healthy breakfast, right? ;)

    1. On our daily walk yesterday morning, during a break in the lovely rain we are getting, I walked through what was not so much purple snow but more purple slush!

They are a fairly healthy cookie ... you'd just have to forgo the chocolate chips ... but then they would be a chocolate chip cookie anymore!

      Meg:)
