Lovely Pear and Dark Chocolate Loaf

I really love banana bread, those loaves that are more bread than cake, less sweet and filled with extra goodness that make them suitable for breakfast in lieu of toast. Sometimes though, it's nice to discover a recipe for a loaf with no banana ... for times when you have no over-ripe bananas to use up, when bananas are not in season, when you feel like something different.

❤ Slices of lovely Pear and Chocolate Loaf

I found just such a loaf, made with gluten-free flours, pear puree and dark chocolate (and no bananas) in Emma Galloway's amazing cookbook,  My Darling Lemon Thyme. This is her recipe and this is how it came together in my kitchen:

Thin slivers of fresh pear ready to make a homemade puree.

Smooth pear puree and chunks of semi-sweet dark chocolate.

Mixing together wholesome ingredients like ...
buckwheat & brown rice flours, almond meal, coconut milk, pear, eggs, dark chocolate.

Just combined batter awaiting a loaf tin.

Ready for the heat of the oven to work its magic.

Golden and moist with puddles of warm, dark chocolate hiding inside.

Slicing this warm, moist loaf reveals puddles of delicious dark chocolate inside. Lovely on a cooler Autumn day when the sky outside is grey and showers patter gently on the roof. Its subtle sweetness is perfect with a  cup of fragrant tea, a hot coffee or a milky cocoa.

Perhaps you'll have some pears to use up soon too?

  1. That first photo makes my tummy rumble. It looks so hearty and delicious. I make bread using nut flours etc. and have a slice or two topped with strawberry purée and sliced banana for breakfast. As I am the only one who eats it I slice and freeze.

Looking at your bread especially with that chocolately bottom I do believe everyone here would enjoy it.

  3. Yum, that looks great. The recipe has me thinking I may need to consider planting a tropical pear or two.

    1. Growing your own pears would be lovely, Sherri. Then you could make a whole lot of pear puree for lots of these loaves. Meg:)
