Saturday's Simple Things

In a world where right now things can feel as though they are constantly changing, I'm glad for some small and simple things, here in the space of home, that bring a little contentment, a little joy, a little comfort and a little peace...

Watering the garden in the early morning light.
(I love the sound of water splashing onto these large Queensland Arrowroot leaves.)

Collecting fragrant Frangipani flowers that fall onto our lawn.
(Free perfume from a neighbour's tree.)

Knitting a few rows every now and then.
(I ❤ the deep sea colour of this simple shawl-to-be.)

Planting little seedlings in the veg patch.
(The promise of homegrown food to come.)

Watching the bees  plunder our garden's flowers.
(This is a noisy native Teddy Bear Bee.)

Home baking for now and for later.
(Is there anything more comforting than the scent of a baking cake?)

What are you making, growing, watching, baking or listening to during these rather surreal times? Is it bringing you a little peace too?

Meg

  1. The frangipani flowers are beautiful, almost as if they are made of silk.
The aroma of baking often wafts through this house. I've found more comfort in it than usual over the last few weeks. X

    1. The Frangipani flowers are so pretty, Jules. I can see our neighbour's tree from my kitchen windown and love collecting the creamy flowers that fall onto our lawn. Their scent is heavenly.

I think baking can be quite comforting too...as can eating cake! Meg;)

  2. My basil and coriander seed mats have grown and have nice bunches of each on both and then this week something, I'm assuming a possum munched through both my coriander bunches and left the stalks so I was a bit cranky as it was ready for use so now I have to plant the coriander again and wait....so disappointing. The cakes look great. Let me know how your veggies go today.

    1. Shame that something has munched on your coriander, Kathy. Pesky possum! I picked up my fruit and veg box today and am very happy with it. I just got a small box this week, to supplement what I had left in my crispers and fruit bowl, and think the quality is great. I am going to order a larger box next time. Meg:)

    2. So glad you are happy with the quality...My order will be once a fortnight because one week kids are here and the next they are not so I got my order today for the coming week. Made a salsa, zucchini slice is in the oven and the rest of the veggies are in their containers in the fridge. Potatoes in the pantry. Have a good week - about to make ice cream now. On Thursday I made 3 main dishes, an Asian Chicken dish in the slow cooker, Tumeric Coconut Chicken & Veggies and a sausage dish with a sort of gravy - flavours are a bit beef strog..similar ingredients. I froze individual serves for me when I am on my own and family serves of 3. So my freezer and fridge is stocked with healthy food and I can get a few nights off from cooking.

    1. Hi Andrea. Things seem a lot fresher here in the cooler Autumn months. Our Summers tend to sap the life out of everything ... including this gardener! Meg:)

  4. I've just planted seeds of all sorts of greens....lettuce varieties, asian greens, chard etcn....there's not a seedling to be had in town anywhere. I haven't been out, just people posting on our local FB page, asking where they can get any. Luckily I had a good supply of seeds from the Library Seed Exchange. Other than that, sewing....still making those drawstring bags and some pouches for wombats.....a lot of online and phone chatting with friends and family near and far. Enjoy your peaceful weekend Meg x

    1. Seeds and seedlings are really hard to come by now, Nanette. I looked online the other night, at Diggers and Eden Seeds, and they are not taking any new orders as they are swamped with so many to fill right now. I have a little collection of seeds, some saved from my own patch and some now from a friend who very kindly gave me seeds for Asian greens. I have some from our library community garden - marigold, yellow cosmos and rocket. I think community seed exchanges are wonderful! I hope you are enjoy your weekend too. MegXx

    1. That's very kind, Stephanie. I am enjoying knitting this shawl. The pattern is really simple, mostly garter stitch, but there is an option to add a picot edge which I will do if I have enough yarn left. I love the colour. It's called "Jasper". MegXx

  7. The possums will eat just about everything down to the soil so I now have a couple of small drop over green houses from Aldiin the yard and a few more self watering polystyrene boxes of seedlings up on my deck where the cafe blinds can be kept shut at night .
I walk everyday,, do some gardening, puzzles and knit or sew.
I'm retired and live alone so this is mostly pretty normal for me except no friend catch ups and Art group and growing more food plants.
Very fortunate to have boxes and baskets of yarn and fabric, lots of books to read or reread and plenty of DVDs and the library still has ebooks available.
    Stay Home...Please stay home !
Those that get really ill will be taken alone, suffer alone and some even die alone with no family contact, is this what we want for the children and elderly.
Everyone stay safe and enjoy the peace and quality time at home.

    1. It sounds like you have some lovely things to enjoy during days at home, Margaret. Puzzles are great! We have started a 1000 piece puzzle which we've set up on a big board in our living room. I did get some books before the library closed but am also quite keen to try ebooks too for titles I'm interested in.

Not being able to catch up with friends, as one normally would, is quite a challenging aspect of social distancing restrictions, but it's just what is necessary right now to keep everyone as safe as we can.

      Take Care, Margaret.

  9. That blossom looks beautiful quite unlike anything you see growing round here, I bet it smells heavenly.

I love the idea of focusing on the simple things, the beauty in the ordinary. We need to do that all the time, don't we, but most especially now.
