Simple & Sweet Chocolate Slice

A sweet chocolate slice, made from a few simple pantry ingredients and some butter, is quite a nostalgic treat here. My mother made this, from her trusty and somewhat splattered "Day to Day Cookery" book, when we were small and I remember it being one of the first things I learnt to cook. I make it rarely now, but when I do, it's a happy treat that disappears very quickly!

 Pieces of deliciousness!

My Mum gave me a copy of the "Day to Day Cookery" book when I left home and, I'm proud to say, my copy is now just as splattered as hers! I've tinkered with the original recipe to reduce the sugar in the slice by half so it's a little less sweet ... that's just my way. Here's how I make it now:

Sweet & Simple Chocolate Slice

1 & 1/4 cups white spelt flour (or plain flour)
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 Tablespoons raw cacao powder (or cocoa)
3/4 cup dessicated coconut
1/4 cup coconut sugar (or brown sugar)
125g butter
1 egg

1.  Preheat oven to 180C.
2.  Sift flour, baking powder and cacao into a mixing bowl.
3.  Melt butter in a small saucepan.
4.  Beat egg.
5.  Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the melted butter. Begin to
combine with dry ingredients and then add the beaten egg. Mix well.
6.  Press mixture into a slice tray.
7.  Bake for 15 minutes.
8.  Cool before topping with a simple chocolate icing and a sprinkling of coconut. ❤

 Simply yummy!

You can make a simple chocolate icing by mixing together 1 cup of icing sugar and 1 Tablespoon of cacao powder (or cocoa) with a little hot water. Just sift the icing sugar and cocoa into a bowl so there are no lumps and then mix with hot water, a little bit at a time, until you get the consistency you want. You can then flavour with vanilla essence too before spreading thinly over your freshly baked slice.

Disappearing quickly!

There is nothing fancy about this slice. Just simple ingredients and a little icing and you have a delicious treat for afternoon tea!

  1. I prefer the simple ones and they're always the ones we go back to. Like you said pantry ingredients you have and they are simple. They always stir up memories too.
I remember using Cookery The Australian Way in school.
Enjoy the rest of your slice.

  3. Meg, that looks delicious. My daughter had 'Day to Day Cookery' when in high school. They must have done a few weeks of cooking from memory...which wasn't a bad idea at all.

    1. I think it was a commonly used cookbook, Chel. I know I made quite a few things from it at school too. Meg:)

  4. We had the day to day cookery book too we used it for school....love Mum's old hand written spirex notebook with her writing. She hates her writing but I love it. We all love chocolate slice in this house too.

  5. What a delightful idea! A simple, home made dessert!

Since we are 'Nana' and 'Pop' and do try to not eat much in the way of dessert now, it is difficult for me to bake..... When it will be around, to 'tempt.'

But! We have a 7 year old, a 12 years old, and a 17 year old grand sons next door! Growing boys love dessert! I really must begin again, when the weather cools down. :-)

We are in the Northern Hemisphere, and our August can still be hot. Although happily, less warm temps are due.

I like to look on August, as the beginning of Autumn (Lughnasa/Lammas). Because I love Autumn. I want it to contain Aug., Sept., and Oct.

    Gentle hugs,

  6. Hi Kathy and Hello Luna. For some reason I am yet to fathom, I can't reply to your comments as I normally would, so thought I would just post my own reply here underneath.

Kathy, I think it is just lovely to pull out those old recipe books that belonged to our mothers or grandmothers and find the recipes we grew up with, the food on the tables of our childhood bring back so many memories. I cook many of the dishes my Mother cooked for us and still love them.

Luna, How lovely that your grandsons are so close to you and to be able to cook for them. I'm sure they'd love this chocolate slice and it's so easy to make. I love Autumn too, our Winter here has been more like an extended Autumn season, rather than a truly cold Winter. I do wonder what that means for the Summer ahead though. Meg:)

  7. But Dear, why reply to comments here, here? When you do that, people have to come once to read/comment. And come back again, to read your reply comments.

I for one, just don't have the time, to do that.

I go to my commenter's blogs, and read/comment there!

This has always been my way.

After all, everyone loves to receive comments. And not everyone has the time, to return to an already-read blog, to see if they got any, there.

    Maybe think on this....? :-)

    1. Hi Luna, It is lovely when people leave a comment because then you know someone is reading! I have always replied to comments this way but I also love to visit the blogs of folk who visit here and leave comments for them. I have found many lovely blogs this way. I think this blogging thing is quite a reciprical process. You are right though, sometimes I don't have time to go back to see if the blog author has replied under the comment I have left for them. Food for thought! Meg:)

  8. Hi Meg, my daughter just loves this slice. I think I'll make it again soon. I love how you change the recipes around to suit you, I do that a lot too. Often halving the sugar content and no one even notices! You have a lovely blog and we have lots in common too. Teachers for one! I'm glad I have found you, I'll be sure to visit often.

    1. Hi, Belinda. The sugar content in sweet recipes is something I am always tinkering with...I often find I can drastically reduce it without affecting the end result and everyone is still happy to eat it! I'll be visiting you too and am looking forward to reading about your journey in your new home. Meg:)
