Postcards from Inner City Melbourne

A plane, a bus and a tram got us from home and into the heart of Melbourne, Australia's second largest city.  A new-to-us city! With just a few days there, we made the most of our time, and the city's public transport network, to explore the inner city.

Trees and skyscrapers in the heart of Melbourne.

The very busy Flinders Street Station.
(Just a short walk from our apartment.)

A Melbourne tram trundling along the street.

A view of the city's glittering lights  from the top of its Eureka Skydeck tower.
(297m high!)

One of Melbourne's many "decorated" laneways ...

... with a little yarn bombing too!

Along the Yarra River at night.

The very impressive St. Paul's Cathedral.

... and the stunning architecture inside.

Inside the Old Melbourne Gaol ...

... and inside one of its tiny, quiet cells.

The light towers of the Melbourne Cricket Ground...

... and a cricketer immortalised in bronze.

Autumn's changing leaves ...

... that blanketed the ground of a city park.

A very fancy French pear pastry.

The view from our apartment windows.

Our days in Melbourne were very cold and mostly overcast. Rugged up against the freezing wind, back packs slung over our shoulders, we discovered much that was just a short distance from our apartment abode. I'm sure, if we returned again to Melbourne, there'd be much more we'd discover.

  2. It's such a great city very European but my God it can get cold. We lived in Melbourne for 2 years and James was born there. I love that you can get dressed up in winter jackets, boots and scarfs too. St Kilda is so close by to the city just a tram ride away from the city. We lived in an apartment 2kms from the city and 1 km from St Kilda beach. Funny thing is it still took 30 mins to get to the city on the tram that 2kms because of the traffic. In Brisbane I lived 10 kms from work and it only took me 10 mins to drive there. Great architecture in Melbourne love your pics.

    1. We certainly wore all our Winter woollies, Kathy. The wind was icy, Brrr! We only had a few days in Melbourne and so didn't venture too far from the inner city. Perhaps, when we visit again, we'll explore further out. Meg:)

  3. Glad you enjoyed your time in our beautiful city. Next time you come down be sure to come out east and savour the Dandenongs as well as the wineries in the Yarra Valley. You'll love it!
    Take care

    1. It would be lovely to explore out further, Cathy. I have travelled along the Great Ocean Road but funnily enough never into the city or other areas of Victoria. Next time! Meg:)

    1. Chel, we stayed in an apartment in Flinders Lane. It was self contained so that meant we didn't need to eat out and that I could pack morning tea and lunches for our trips out and about. We could walk easily to many places or catch a tram. Meg:)

  5. Reminds me of Brisbane City, only bigger and perhaps more multicultural in it's architecture. Lovely snaps.

  6. Lovely photos. That pastry looks absolutely delicious.
I'm going to be in Melbourne soon, so I'd like to visit the cathedral and the gaol. Did you visit any other historic places?

    1. The pear pastry was lovely, Nil. My sister, who lives in Melbourne, treated us to morning tea at a lovely French patisserie. I was going to take a photo of the chocolate eclair that my son ordered by he devoured it too quickly! Meg:)
