Our Little Local Creek

Just down the hill and around the corner, begins a path that walks you along our little local creek. It meanders all the way to the sea! When times are very dry, as they were back over the Winter months, our little section of this waterway is just a rocky creek bed. But, when we have lots of rain, as we have this past week, it soon starts flowing again. During breaks in the rain, or sometimes while it's pouring, we go down to the creek to see how far the water has come up and how fast it's flowing.

Over the past few years, our little creek area has been rehabilitated. Invasive weed species have been suppressed and more native trees, grasses and reeds planted en masse. I love to see the cycles of growth and blossoming and setting seed that we observe in the plants that grow along the creek. As we walk this path almost every day, there is always something beautiful and botanical that catches my eye.

I love watching the rejuvenation that the rain brings; the increased flow of water in the creek bed, the green that returns so quickly to the landscape, the blossoming of native flora and the abundance of birds and other wild creatures that call our creek their home. Nature seems to rejoice, as much as we do, when plentiful rain falls.

  1. You do have a nice place to walk,Meg. I can tell that the plants are loving the rain as you say. So are ours and so are the hundreds of weeds. LOL! I got out early this morning to work on getting rid of them before it got too hot as it is very muggy.

    1. There are park benches at certain spots all along the pathway, Andrea. Many folk stroll by and sit for a while. It is lovely to sit and listen to the babbling of the creek. Meg ☺

  5. What a lovely space, you are lucky to live near it. I love how community groups rehabilitate bush land, it’s something I’ve always been interested in, and may actually do one day.

    1. It's been a really big project but it's made such a difference. Rehabilitation work now continues further downstream. They've pulled out a lot of lantana!! Meg☺

  6. The creek is so sweet, it’s funny how much joy kids get out of seeing something like a creek rise and fall with the weather, such a simple pleasure. So good there is a lot of work being done on weed control. We have a lot of clearing out in our creek we will need to be doing once we move. We will need to find native grasses to support the bank in some areas as we do I suspect.

    1. It is wonderful having the creek such a short walk from home, Emma. We love to rock hop across it, float leaf or bark boats and our dog thinks it is heaven to swim in. It's a Labrador thing! I Think your boys will love having a creek on your property.

  7. I grew up near a creek and spent hours exploring the creek, finding tadpoles and turtles to take home, the bush land surrounding it held so much wildlife including the turkey chick that one of my brothers brought home. I have a lot of happy memories of the time I spent there.

  8. All the creeks are well and truly flowing around here that's for sure. Thanks for your comment on my blog and it's great that your son is cooking and prepping as well. I believe girls will in-evidently learn to cook however I think boys need to learn as well. The spreadsheet idea with the money is good and also going a step further is to have pretend shares in a spreadsheet and see how they travel over 1, 2 or 3 years of their lives to learn how they work. Pick 5 big top companies and track their share prices and dividends with say a pretend $500 starting investment. Sometimes they are up, sometimes they are down but a great way to start saving for a house deposit vs the low percentage in the bank account. In the new book Scott talks about the best bank account to open for a 15 year old so we will be doing that in a couple of months time.

  10. Spider lilies are so pretty - and hardy. Mine died back in the dry, but returned, with the wet. I love them, and glad to see they live near your local creek too. I would love a permanent creek on our property, but I suppose we have our gully that floods in the wet season, instead. It was so dry over the autumn/winter period though, the water is just sinking into the ground. It hasn't flooded yet. If your creek is running, then it means you have some good ground water. :)
