There are several op-shops to visit very close to where I live. I often pop in if I'm passing to see what is hanging on the racks or stocked on the shelves. Sometimes, I have a specific item I'm hoping to find second-hand and other times I may just be in the right shop at the right time! These are my recent op-shop finds:
A set of four of these blue-ringed pasta bowls. They cost $8 total. Their blue rings match some plates I bought a while ago. We have used these multiple times already for soup and pasta meals. They hold generous serves!
This floaty cotton top cost only a few dollars. It's a brighter red than showing in the photograph. As it's a very lightweight cotton, it will be perfect to wear in Spring and Summer. I πit!
This book is filled with amazing tales and stunning photographs that chronicle the history of attempts to climb the highest peak on Earth. Published in 2002, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the first successful summit by Edmund Hillary and Tenzin Norgay in 1953, all three of us were fascinated by the stories and images and have since borrowed more books from our local libraries on the topic. I can't remember the exact cost but it was less than $10.
Not for a little while, but you know, op shopping is about going along and seeing what happens -every now and then you find good stuff, as you did.
ReplyDeleteYes, sometimes it feels like serendipity when unearthing an op-shop treasure one hasn't expected to find. I found a particularly beautiful 'strawberry' stitched tea cloth once that was at the bottom of a pile of other linens. I couldn't believe my luck! Meg:)
DeleteI love a visit to our second hand shops, I normally don't look at clothes, I still have far to many, but I love the china section, always looking for different things to become plant pots. Plus toys, I do love to keep different toys here, we have packed a few up ready to go back to the second hand shop, so they can have another life.
ReplyDeleteThere are often toys in our op-shops here, Marlene, and they are a fraction of the price of buying new. I always keep a look out for books for my son as he's an avid reader. Meg:)
DeleteMeg I love finding treasure in op shops! Unfortunately I rarely need anything and usually only leave the shop with a book or six. I do the same at gift stores and antique stores. It is always books. My husband manages to get good gear though. A few weeks back he bought some really good quality, new work boots from a pawn shop. Had I gone in with him I no doubt would have bought a book. :-)
ReplyDeleteI like browsing through the books at op-shops too, Sherri. My son is an avid reader and I like to see what I can find that he might be interested in reading. I also love to look through the old linens and embroideries because I love to sew with these. Meg:)
DeleteSuch lovely 'finds'. I do love it when I find something that we need in our equivalent of op shops, think they are what we call charity shops here. They have only just re-opened here and I have yet to set foot in one since the start of lockdown in March!
ReplyDeleteI missed the op-shops when ours were closed down. I like finding little things that we will use for bargain prices. Meg:)
DeleteI love op shops and I'm lucky enough to work in a place that has an op shop attached and pre-COVID I was a regular customer, but since we have reopened I haven't been brave enough to go and look around as there is always too many people. I will have to soon though as summer is on it's way and I want to buy some light weight dresses for the hot days ahead.
ReplyDeleteJan, I think if I worked near an op-shop, I'd be forever popping in to see what was 'new'. Meg:)
DeleteWell done with your finds, it is quite amazing to find exactly what you want when you go in with a specific item in mind, has happened to me sometimes.
ReplyDeleteMy nearest op shop has 2 baskets of embroidery, dailies etc. Are you looking for anything in particular?
I like to browse through the different linens, Margaret, and see if I can find pretty stitching that I can then use in sewing. I make little things like drawstring bags and tiny brooches with pieces from old doilies or tea clothes. Meg:)
DeleteFor someone who generally avoids shopping at all costs, I can pass an hour in an op shop and not even notice π But I find I have to exercise self control because everything seems so good/beautiful/useful π I suppose that’s what box store shoppers experience π
ReplyDeleteI am like you, Cheryl. Shopping is NOT my favourite thing (rather be gardening) but op-shops are a bit of a different experience. I don't feel like I am adding to the Earth's woes when I make a second hand purchase. Meg:)
DeleteI enjoy browsing our local Op Shops too but haven't been to them lately because of the Covid virus but am looking to go back soon if there are not too many people there as our local ones are quite small but packed with goodies. We are running out of books here so will go this week as we get all our books from them and then donate them back. I always look for glasses that match the ones I have to make up a bigger set and do the same with china.
ReplyDeleteHi Rosie. I love finding books in op-shops. I picked up two more this week for my son to take and read on camp. Great to donate them back again or pass on to others when finished with them so they keep circulating and get to be enjoyed over and again. Meg:)
DeleteI haven't been shopping, (except for food,) since the pandemic hit. Those are some great bargains that you found! I do still wear several items that I bought at the Salvation Army in the last few years. I have a few sun dresses that I love. I hand wash them, so they last longer.
ReplyDeleteI pick quiet times to visit op-shops, Stephanie. I enjoy browsing and taking my time. Meg:)
DeleteSome great finds. I've not been able to visit the charity shops since lockdown began (except for donating). It's not easy to browse when I have Lily with me. X
ReplyDeleteI always go to op-shops on my own, Jules. Then I can take as much time as I like to browse.
DeleteMegXx
They are great bargains and oh how I do love a bargain. Kids grow so fast that it's always worth checking out the charity shops isn't it. I have had many a bargain over the years
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Cherie. Children grow sooo fast! My boy is growing 'at a rate of knots' and op-shop clothes are a good way to keep costs for clothing down. I can usually find something in good condition for him. Meg:)
DeleteI find orange is a hard colour to find in tshirts especially when the kids used to need one for no bullying day...you did well to pick up that one. Love some bargains while supporting charities too.
ReplyDeleteI was having no luck finding polos for camp, Kathy, but then my friend gave me two in the right size! He π§‘s the orange t-shirt! Meg:)
DeleteThese are great finds. It's nice to find something that brings cheer to your day. Interesting book, looks like one I would pick also. Thanks for your visit and kind comment dear Meg!! Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteWe all enjoyed the book, it was a great find. I hope you have a wonderful day too! MegXx
DeleteI love those pasta dishes! Blue and white are a favourite of mine too.
ReplyDeleteI just did a post on my latest op shop finds. Then I came here to find you had posted about the same thing.
I have an addiction to op shopping, I like anything vintage, and lately have been on the search for cotton material for crafting.
xTania
I love all your op shop treasures Meg. I too love looking in the op shops - lately I have been seaching for vintage glassware to make candles in to. I think you found some real bargains there!
