Late Afternoon in Noosa

Late afternoon by the sea is such a lovely time to be outside. That time of day when the light begins to fade, when the sea breezes refresh your skin, when the fine sand is cooler underfoot and when shadows and silhouettes are shaped by the setting sun. Our little family enjoyed just such an afternoon last Sunday, up in Noosa, a popular beachside town not far from here.

A golden sunset over the waters of the Noosa River.

We made the trip up to Noosa,  a couple of hours to the North, to watch the Surfing Dog Spectacular, as our boy loves anything and everything related to our canine friends. Together with their surfing buddies, quite a few cool, well-trained dogs caught some waves off Noosa's Main Beach and rode them in. (Our Sir Steve dog was not among them...we all agreed that he would sink a surfboard should we ever manage to get him up on one!)

 Heading out past the breakers...

...and riding a wave back in again!

After such a funny event, we wandered back down the beautiful beach and over to Noosa's river, a spot so close to where it meets the sea. We wallowed contentedly there until the sun began to set. As the last rays of sunlight signalled the end of the "day", we reluctantly dried off before we set off in the twilight to a favourite picnic place.

Twilight over the Noosa River.

We spread out our simple picnic dinner, upon our little red rug, at the entrance to Noosa's National Park. There, as "night" settled around us, we listened to the commencement of a chorus of cicadas and watched the last-of-the-day's surfers ride their last waves in to shore.

My picnickers looking out over the ocean.

Night descends over the ocean.

The drive home was a happy one. Salty and sandy and content from an afternoon spent together, in Noosa. Bliss!

I hope you will spend your coming Sunday afternoon contentedly too.

  1. Meg, I have a sibling who lives in Noosa. I know someone who would like to be part of a simple living group on the Sunshine Coast and is interested in meeting likeminded people who enjoy the 'simple life'. If a group can't be formed she would be happy to meet up now and again with others as she lives on the Sunshine Coast. If you were interested I could get her to contact you.

    1. Hi, Chel. I'd love to live in Noosa with the beach and the river right there. (The best of both worlds!) I'm not sure how I'd go with so many tourists though!

I haven't joined any simple living groups, as I'm still really at the start of that journey and not sure I'd have that much to offer. I do venture in to Northey St City Farm sometimes and have done a few of the classes they offer periodically. I wouldn't be able to attend a regular group on the Sunshine Coast as we live down in Brisbane but a catch up every now and again with like minded folk would be lovely. Meg:)

  2. Good morning Meg, happy weekend. I love that part of the world, we go camping to Noosa north shore as often as possible, it truly is a beautiful place. What a hoot seeing dogs that can surf, I just love it. Have a fab weekend.

    1. I love Noosa, Fiona, especially the National Park where you can walk all the way out to Alexandria Bay and back again...stopping to swim along the way! It's the third time we've been up to Noosa to see the surfing dogs and we always have a most lovely time. Meg:)

    1. My sisters and I used to catch yabbies in the local creeks around where we lived growing up. Hope you have a great weekend. Meg:)

  5. I so adore this post! Thank you for sharing your afternoon/evening with us all. It brought back wonderful memories for me of going down to the beach after school in Hawaii, floating in the water for a bit, maybe doing a bit of body surfing or Boogie boarding and then watching the sunset. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I think languid afternoons like this, by the beach or in the river, are such simple happy times, Debbie. Hope you have a lovely weekend too. Meg:)

  6. Rather envious of your lovely day at Noosa Meg. I've been there only a couple of times and just love it, except got eaten by midges the last time a couple years ago. I heard you mention Northey St Farm and wondered if you remember my friend Kirsty who used to work there a couple years ago now. :) XX

    1. Hi Sally. I love Northey St City Farm. I was at the little nursery there just yesterday getting some perpetual spinach seedlings for my wicking barrels. I haven't met your friend, Kristy, though. I am thinking about doing an Introduction to Permaculture weekend course there in a couple of weeks, with Morag Gamble. Meg:)

  7. I grew up on a lot of coastal beach-fronts in NSW, but for some reason, I'm more drawn to inland mountains and valleys. Though it is nice to catch glimpses again. So thanks for sharing your afternoon adventure at the beach. :)

    1. Growing up at the beach sounds quite idyllic, Chris. I grew up on the Atherton Tablelands, in Far North Qld, and I miss the rolling green hills and red volcanic soil of that place very much. I love the sea too though, although we didn't spend a lot of time there as children. I think I am just simply drawn to "outside", to lots of wide open space where nature offers up so much. Meg:)

  8. It was nice being able to go to the beach on the weekend with friends, without having to take our parents. However, I'm surprised by the near misses we had with wildlife, as well. I won't scare you with the details, or you might not want to visit another beach again. ;)
